HRSA- RCORP Psychostimulant II Grant

Location:
Coastal Bend Region, TX

Area Snapshot:
The Texas Coastal Bend covers 9 counties along the Gulf of Mexico, with Corpus Christi as the largest city. While Corpus Christi has some public transportation and taxi services, most of the region is rural and lacks reliable transportation. About 550,000 people live across these counties, with limited options for getting around.

For this project, Feonix and our partners are focusing on the Texas counties of Aransas, Live Oak, Bee, Refugio, San Patricio, Duval, Jim Wells, Brooks, Kennedy, and Kleberg. It’s important to note that Bee, Brooks, Duval, Jim Wells, and Kleberg counties have been in persistent poverty, with 20% or more of their populations living in poverty for the past 30 years, according to the US Census.

Program Overview:
Access to prevention, treatment, and recovery services for Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a national challenge, especially in minority and rural communities. To address this, the Coastal Plains Community Center (CPCC), Community Action Corporation of South Texas (CACOST), United Connections Counseling (UCC), and Feonix-Mobility Rising (FMR) have partnered to improve SUD/OUD services in rural counties by offering free rides to these services.

As part of this program, all partners use the Unite Us platform for efficient, closed-loop referrals to social support services. Additionally, experts from the Texas A&M University School of Public Health, Texas A&M Transportation Institute, and Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University collaborate with local practitioners to share insights and strategies from across the country, enhancing and expanding access to SUD/OUD resources.

Program Highlights:

  • New Approach to Psychostimulant Abuse Prevention and Treatment: Utilizing transportation as a key intervention.
  • Transportation Support: Providing transportation for underserved populations to access necessary services.
  • Enhanced Collaboration: Strengthening partnerships among health providers in the region to address the challenges of SUD/OUD.
  • Improved Efficiency: Streamlining service coordination through the Unite Us referral technology.
